How to Choose an SEO Agency in Australia (and the Red Flags)

Short answer
Ask five questions before signing with an SEO agency: who does the work and where do they sit, what happens to your accounts and content if you leave, can you see a real client report with the metrics they actually measure, why does the contract need a lock-in period, and what would make them tell you not to hire them. Guaranteed rankings, percentage-of-ad-spend pricing on SEO, and refusal to name the reporting metrics are the three clearest red flags.
Ask who does the work
Not who sells it — who does it. Whether production is local or offshore matters less than whether anyone will tell you plainly. An agency that gets evasive about where the work happens is being evasive about something.
Ask what you keep if you leave
Google Ads accounts, Analytics properties, Search Console, the content, the Google Business Profile. All of it should be in your name from day one. Agencies that host your accounts under their own umbrella are building a switching cost, not a service.
Ask to see a real report
Not a template. A real one, redacted. What you're checking is whether the metrics connect to business outcomes. A report full of impressions and "keyword movements" with no mention of enquiries tells you what the agency is optimising for.
Treat guaranteed rankings as disqualifying
Nobody controls Google's results. A guarantee means either the target keywords are worthless, or someone is planning to do something that will eventually cost you the rankings you have. Google's own guidelines warn about this.
Ask why the contract locks you in
There are legitimate reasons for a minimum term — a large upfront audit and build, for instance. But "twelve months because SEO takes time" is a reason for you to be patient, not a reason for you to be contractually trapped. We run month to month and explain why on our pricing page.
Ask what would make them say no
An agency that has never turned down a client will take yours regardless of fit. The most useful answer to this question is a specific example.
Sanity-check the cost against the return
Work out what a customer is worth and how many extra you would need for the retainer to pay for itself. If that number feels implausible, the problem is the plan, not the agency. Our guide to SEO pricing in Australia sets out what each budget tier realistically buys.
