How to Split Budget Between Google Ads and SEO

Short answer

If you need enquiries this month, weight toward Google Ads. If you can wait two quarters for a channel that gets cheaper over time, weight toward SEO. A common starting split for an established small business is 60 percent paid and 40 percent organic in year one, inverting by year three as rankings mature. Businesses with immediate cash flow pressure should start almost entirely paid; businesses with high customer lifetime value and patience should start organic.

The three variables that decide it

How quickly you need results, what a customer is worth over their lifetime, and how competitive your organic terms are. Everything else is noise. Work out those three before allocating a dollar.

Why paid usually goes first

Ads produce enquiries within days and, more importantly, produce keyword conversion data within weeks. That data makes the SEO programme dramatically more accurate, because you build pages for terms you have already watched convert rather than terms a tool says have volume.

Why organic wins eventually

Paid costs the same per click on day one thousand as on day one, arguably more as competition rises. Organic costs more relative to its return early and less later. Over a three-year horizon organic is almost always the cheaper channel; over three months it almost never is.

Use ads to de-risk SEO

Before committing to a twelve-month content programme for a keyword cluster, buy the traffic for a month and see what it does. If paid traffic on those terms doesn't convert, organic traffic on them won't either — and you've saved a year.

Don't split a budget that's too small to split

Below roughly $2,000 a month total, splitting produces two underfunded channels. Pick one, do it properly, and add the second when the first is producing. We say the same on our pricing page, which is why the entry plan is single-channel.

Revisit quarterly, not monthly

Both channels have enough month-to-month variance that monthly reallocation is reacting to noise. Quarterly gives you enough data to see a real trend. Our answer on SEO versus Google Ads covers the channel comparison in more depth.
