Creative Fatigue: How to Spot It and What to Do About It

Dino Bernardo

Short answer

Creative fatigue shows up as rising frequency alongside falling click-through rate and rising cost per result, usually two to six weeks into a campaign depending on audience size. The fix is new creative, not new targeting or bids. Build a refresh cadence — new concepts every fortnight for active campaigns — rather than reacting once performance has already dropped.

The three numbers that diagnose it

Frequency climbing above roughly 2.5 to 3 for a cold audience, click-through rate falling while impressions hold steady, and cost per result rising. When all three move together, the audience has seen the ad enough times to stop responding.

Why fiddling with targeting doesn't fix it

The instinct when results drop is to change the audience or the bid. But if the creative has stopped working, a fresh audience just means a new group of people ignoring the same ad. Meta's algorithm is good at finding buyers; what it needs is something new to show them.

Distinguish fatigue from a bad ad

An ad that never worked is a different problem from one that stopped working. Look at the first 72 hours: if CTR was strong then declined, that's fatigue. If it was weak from the start, the concept or the offer is wrong.

New concepts, not new colours

Recolouring the same layout produces the same fatigue curve. A genuinely new concept means a different angle — a different objection addressed, a different format, a different opening three seconds. Three distinct angles beat one message in three palettes.

Build a production cadence

Plan creative as a recurring supply, not a campaign asset. Photos of completed jobs, short phone-shot video, customer reviews as graphics, before-and-afters. Most small businesses have enough raw material already; what they lack is the habit of collecting it.

Retire, don't delete

Pause fatigued creative rather than deleting it. Audiences recover, and a strong performer from six months ago often works again after a break. Keep a library with performance history.

Set an expectation with whoever pays the bills

Creative fatigue is a permanent operating cost of Meta advertising, not a failure. Budgeting for continuous production is part of the channel. It's built into how we scope Meta Ads management.
