Answer

Why is my website traffic suddenly dropping?

Short answer

Sudden traffic drops usually have one of five causes: a broken analytics or tag setup (the traffic didn't drop, the measurement did), a Google algorithm update, a technical fault such as accidental noindexing or a failed migration, a manual action or security compromise, or ordinary seasonality. Check in that order — measurement faults are the most common and the easiest to rule out.

Rule out measurement first

Before investigating anything else, confirm the tracking still fires. A GA4 property with a broken tag, a consent banner change, or a filter applied to the wrong view will all show as a cliff-edge drop. Compare against Search Console clicks, which are measured independently.

Check for an algorithm update

If the decline started on a specific date and Search Console impressions fell with it, cross-reference known update dates. Broad core updates typically affect whole categories of site rather than individual pages.

Look for technical faults

A staging site pushed live with noindex, a robots.txt change, a certificate expiry, a failed redirect map after a migration, or a hosting move can all remove pages from the index within days. Search Console's Pages report will show pages moving out of the indexed state.

Check for a compromise

An unexpected surge of indexed pages followed by a collapse in rankings often indicates injected spam content. Search for site:yourdomain.com.au and look for pages you don't recognise. This is more common on older WordPress installations with outdated plugins than most owners expect.

Then consider seasonality

Compare against the same period last year rather than last month. Many categories have predictable annual troughs that look alarming in a month-on-month view and completely normal year on year.
